The Workers’ International Network sends solidarity greetings to the workers and oppressed people of eSwatini in their current heroic struggle. We are deeply moved by the democratic struggle in eSwatini. This small country was a colony of Britain which reinforced monarchical rule before independence in 1964. Mswati III now personally manages the nations budget and lives like a billionaire in a desperately poor country. All attempts to petition the king for investigation into the deaths of activists, for an elected prime minister and other democratic demands have been repressed. In response to the democratic uprising which has targeted the businesses of the king, there have been summary executions and beatings in the street and shooting into groups of resisters.
We do not support the call for Law and Order against the youth’s uprising; instead we support the demands for the right to organize political parties, election of the prime minister, release of all political prisoners, and for the army to return to barracks and be brought under democratic control. Peace and development will only come by ending this corrupt monarchy and through the convening of a constituent assembly to transfer power to the people.
We urge all working people internationally to support democracy in eSwatini and for the ANC government and all governments immediately to stop military support to the king.
We pledge solidarity to students, unemployed youth, workers, democratic members of parliament in hiding and democratic organizations: forward to Freedom!
